Vermont Patios Project Spotlight

At Vermont Patios, we believe that every outdoor space should feel like a natural extension of your home — a place to gather, relax, and soak in Vermont’s beautiful seasons.
This recently completed custom wood deck installation in Burlington, Vermont shows how quality craftsmanship and thoughtful design can completely transform a backyard.

Project Overview

Located in one of Burlington’s vibrant neighborhoods, this project focused on creating a comfortable, elevated outdoor living space for a growing family.
They needed a deck that would be both stylish and sturdy — perfect for hosting family barbecues, morning coffee breaks, and cozy fall evenings around a firepit.

Key Goals for the Project:

  • Design a versatile deck layout that fits the yard’s natural shape
  • Use durable, natural materials that age beautifully
  • Build a structure that could stand up to Vermont’s tough winters and humid summers
  • Add functional features like built-in seating and easy backyard access

Design and Materials

For the decking material, we selected premium pressure-treated southern yellow pine, kiln-dried after treatment for added stability.
This choice offered the perfect balance between natural wood beauty and durability, with the option for future staining or finishing.

Deck highlights included:

  • Custom multi-level layout to define different zones (grilling, lounging, dining)
  • Built-in cedar benches for extra seating without taking up extra floor space
  • Decorative wood railings with black aluminum balusters for an updated, open feel
  • Wide stairway access leading directly to the backyard and garden areas
  • Hidden fasteners for a clean, polished surface look

All of the framing was constructed with ground-contact rated lumber for maximum strength and long-term resistance to moisture and decay.

Challenges We Overcame

Burlington’s older properties sometimes come with surprises — and this project was no exception.
The original concrete footings on-site were shallow and cracked, so we removed them and installed new frost-rated footings dug to Vermont building code standards.
We also carefully navigated local permitting regulations to ensure the deck was fully compliant — a key part of working in Burlington’s tight-knit neighborhoods.

The Final Result

The finished deck feels inviting, warm, and built for Vermont living.
By using natural wood tones, careful proportions, and thoughtful features, we created a space that feels cozy without being cramped — and sturdy enough to handle everything from summer parties to heavy winter snowfalls.

The homeowners now have a beautiful outdoor “room” where they can make memories year-round, right in the heart of Burlington.

Another project done right — the Vermont Patios way.
