Project Overview
The homeowners in Vergennes were looking for a way to create a comfortable, semi-shaded outdoor space that felt open yet cozy.
They loved spending time outdoors, but needed relief from the mid-summer sun and wanted a structure that complemented their home’s classic Vermont architecture.

Design and Materials
For this project, we designed a freestanding cedar pergola with classic, clean lines that feel timeless — and Vermont-tough.
Key features included:
- Western Red Cedar beams and posts — chosen for their natural resistance to moisture, insects, and rot
- Mortise and tenon joinery for extra strength and a traditional handcrafted feel
- A slatted roof system to create dappled light while allowing rain and snow to pass through
- Custom post bases mounted on reinforced concrete footings to ensure stability even in heavy winter snow loads
We also included hidden hardware and stainless-steel fasteners to ensure a clean look and long-term durability.
Challenges We Overcame
Vergennes, like many parts of Vermont, has beautiful but unpredictable soil conditions.
Before installation, we conducted a full site inspection and soil test to ensure the footings would hold firm through Vermont’s freeze-thaw cycles.
We also had to carefully navigate underground utilities, working closely with local services to avoid any disruptions.
The Final Result
The finished pergola feels like a natural extension of the home — framing the patio area without overwhelming the yard’s wide-open views.
